A breakthrough last season saw the UBC Thunderbirds reach the CIS men's basketball championship final for the first time since 1986. This evening, the program will be searching for another milestone in the 2010 national title game as they will be gunning for their first CIS banner since 1972. Tonight's match-up, which can be seen live on TSN2 at 3:30 p.m. PT, will be the first all-Canada West final since 1996.

The no. 3 seeded UBC Thunderbirds are off to their second consecutive CIS men's basketball national final after defeating the no. 7 Calgary Dinos 77-63 Saturday night at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa.

Taking two by a combined score of 22-0, British Columbia defeated Concordia 17-0 and 5-0 in a NAIA West Region doubleheader played at Joe Etzel Field on Saturday. With the results, UBC improved to 18-3 overall and 12-1 in the region while CU fell to 3-14 on the season and 1-5 in league action.

It took 20 minutes of action but the no. 3 seeded UBC Thunderbirds found their groove at the CIS men's basketball Final 8 in Ottawa, starting the second half with a 21-0 run to put away the tenacious Lakehead Thunderwolves en route to a 79-58 win in their quarterfinal match-up at Scotiabank Place.

Fourth-year UBC Thunderbirds guard Josh Whyte was named CIS player of the year in men’s basketball, Thursday night during the All-Canadian Banuqet at the Marriott Hotel in Ottawa. Joining Whyte on the stage this evening was T-Bird head coach Kevin Hanson of Vancouver, who captured his second Stuart W. Aberdeen memorial trophy as coach of the year.
