Since reviving the UBC Thunderbirds baseball program 14 years ago, head coach Terry McKaig has developed Canada's lone full-scale university baseball team into an perennial top 25 team in the NAIA and has seen 13 players taken in the MLB Amateur Draft.
This past season, McKaig led the T-Birds to within two wins of their second-ever birth at the NAIA World Series as they won the Cascade Conference/West Grouping regular season and NAIA West Playoff crowns. UBC finished with a 41-13 overall record and reached a program best no. 3 ranking in the NAIA top 25 poll. Two senior standouts, Mark Hardy and Sammie Starr, were taken in the 2010 MLB Draft after impressive four-year UBC careers.
McKaig was honoured as the 2010 NAIA West Grouping Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season. It was the third time he has won the conference level award while at the helm for UBC.
In 2006 McKaig was named the Region I Coach of the Year after the T-Birds claimed their third Region 1 regular-season title and Region 1 Championship and hosted and won the West Coast Super Regional for the first time. UBC's Region 1 record of 28-2 in 2006 was their best ever, as was their overall mark of 49-14 including a 4th place finish in the 2006 NAIA World Series.
Thirteen UBC players have been drafted into Major League Baseball under McKaig's guidance, most notably pitcher and UBC Hall of Famer Jeff Francis, who was selected ninth overall by Colorado in 2002 and currently starts for the Rockies.
A native of Vernon, B.C., McKaig began his post-secondary playing career as a right fielder at North Idaho College ('90-93), before making stops with Albertson College ('94) and the National Baseball Institute ('95-96). He was also spent time with the Kelowna Grizzlies of the semi-pro Pacific International League (summers of '93, '94 and '96) and was a member of the Canadian senior national team in 1995, where he played with the likes of Eric Gagne, Jeff Zimmerman, Cody McKay and Kevin Nicholson.
Prior to coming to UBC, McKaig spent one season as the head coach of the Vancouver Mounties of the Premier Baseball League. He has also managed Team Canada's entry in the Grant Forks International 10 times. He coached the Canadian team at the 2004 World University Baseball Championship in Taipei and 2008 World University Baseball Championship in the Czech Republic. In 2009, led Team Canada to a third place finish at the World Baseball Challenge in Prince George, BC.
McKaig graduated from UBC in 1997 with a degree in human kinetics and a minor in business. He, wife, Davina and their children, Jenna and Trenton, live in Ladner, B.C.
