One of the first tasks Shawn Olson took on as the new head coach of the UBC Thunderbirds football program was building a coaching staff that fit his philosophy about returning excellence to the program he once led on the field to a national title. The first-time head coach has put his stamp on the T-Birds, bringing in full-time assistants Jerome Erdman (defensive coordinator) and Paul Orazietti (recruiting coordinator and running backs).

Shawn Olson, the last quarterback to lead the UBC Thunderbirds to a Vanier Cup title, was named the Thunderbirds’ head football coach on Wednesday by UBC athletic director Bob Philip.  Olson, who navigated UBC to the 1997 Vanier Cup title, returns to Point Grey as the 17th head coach in the program’s history.

Did You Know...
UBC's First Canadian Championship
Eddie Mulhern won the Canadian amateur featherweight boxing championship in 1926 – the first Canadian championship won by a UBC athlete or team.
UBC T-Birds Basketball Champs in 1937
George Pringle, one of UBC's basketball stars of the 1930s, led the Thunderbirds to the Canadian championship in 1937.
1st Winner of the Bobby Gaul Award
George Pringle, a three-time All-Star, was the first person to be selected winner of the prestigious Bobby Gaul Award.
CIS Swimming titles
The women's and men's swimming teams have won a combined 28 CIS Championships.  Since 1998, these two teams have won 22 of those CIS titles.
Liz Cordonier
In 2010, Volleyball standout Liz Cordonier became the first-ever T-Bird to be recognized as the Marilyn Pomfret Award winner (UBC female athlete of the year) and May Brown Trophy recipient (graduating UBC female athlete of the year) at the same Big Block Banquet.
Doug Reimer
UBC Thunderbirds women's volleyball coach Doug Reimer became the first coach in his sport's CIS history to claim five national Coach of the Year honours. He has won the award twice while at UBC (2006, '10), once at Victoria, and twice at Winnipeg.
BLG winners
Three UBC Thunderbirds have brought home BLG Awards as the CIS Athlete of the Year. Liz Cordonier (Female, 2010) from women's volleyball is the most recent winner. Swimmers Annamay Pierse (Female, 2009) and Brian Johns (Male, 2002) have also earned this recognition.
Cory Renfrew
Golfer Cory Renfrew is the first male T-Bird to earn the Bobby Gaul Memorial Trophy (Graduating athlete of the year) and the Bus Phillips Memorial Trophy (athlete of the year). He won the Phillips in 2009 and then added the Gaul in 2010.
WFH CW titles streak
The UBC Thunderbirds women's field hockey team has won seven straight Canada West Championships.
MSOC CW titles
The UBC men's soccer team has won 12 Canada West titles, the most of any male T-Bird squad.
Women's golf NAIA
The women's golf team claimed their third NAIA National Championship in team history in 2010, adding to the banners they won in 2000 and 2004.
WFH CW titles overall
The UBC Thunderbirds women's field hockey team has won 21 Canada West Championships, the most of any UBC team.
First Hall of Fame Inductions
The first inductions into the UBC Sports Hall of Fame were celebrated in 1993.
Men's basketball
The UBC Thunderbirds men's basketball team has qualified for seven of the last CIS Final 8 National Championships. In 2008-09 and 2009-10 they brought home silver medals.
UBC women's volleyball
The UBC Thunderbirds women's volleyball team are three-time defending CIS Champions (2008-2010).
