FAIRBANKS, AK - The no. 2 CIS ranked UBC Thunderbirds downed the University of Alaska-Faribanks Nanooks (NCAA Div. II) 98-85 in the second game of the 2010 Glacier Classic.
Starters
Josh Whyte and
Doug Plumb paced the T-Birds with 19 points apiece, while fellow starter
Brent Malish added 16. Whyte also added six assists, five rebounds, and three steals in 29 minutes.
Nathan Yu chipped in 18 off the bench while
Kamar Burke pulled down a team-high eight boards.
Alaska-Fairbanks was led by Parrish West who had a monster game with 34 points and seven rebounds but it didn't matter as the visiting T-Birds put together a strong run late in the first half to put the contest out of reach.
The Nanooks took their biggest lead of the game midway through the first 20 minute half, going up 20-17 on a pair of West free throws. The teams continued to trade buckets until the final five minutes of the half, when UBC went on a 14-2 run to blow open what was at that point a 27-25 lead for the hosts.
Yu put an exclamation mark on the first half festivities by scoring UBC's last eight points for the 'Birds over the final 85 seconds to push UBC's lead to 48-35 at the break.
Both squads put up an impressive 50 points in the second half, but the Nanooks never closed the gap to single digits the rest of the way.
UBC meets Alaska-Anchorage tomorrow in their second and final game of the Glacier Classic.
