VANCOUVER - The 2009 CIS champion UBC Thunderbirds are well represented on Canada's roster for the Women's Field Hockey World Cup Qualifier 2010 scheduled for later this month in San Diego, CA with four players from their national champion squad ready to represent their country.
Making the trek to California are Sam Smith,
Robyn Pendleton,
Abigail Raye, and
Poonam Sandhu.
Elise Milosevich, UBC's leading scorer in 2009, was named to the reserves for the event.
Smith was a defensive stalwart last season for a T-Bird squad that conceded only 11 goals in 16 games while Pendleton, a star midfielder, was a CIS All-Canadian and CIS Championship MVP. Raye, the 2009 CIS and CW rookie of the year, and Sandhu were part of an impressive freshman class who helped the T-Birds to their seventh straight conference crown.
The foursome are part of a Canadian contingent that must win the qualifier in order to earn a spot in the DO FIH 2010 Women's World Cup scheduled for September in Rosario, Argentina. Canada is set to face traditional Pan American rivals Mexico and the USA, with Belgium, France, and Korea also part of the qualifier.
