PULLMAN, Wash. - Poor weather wreaked havoc all afternoon in Pullman, Wash., but it wasn't enough to derail the UBC Thunderbirds who defeated the Washington State Cougars 9-5 in a rain-shortened seven inning non-conference game.
"The weather today was really ugly and both teams battled steady wind and rain for pretty much the entire seven innings. In the end, we had swung the bats well enough to get a win," said UBC skipper
Terry McKaig.
Coming into the season, the T-Birds projected to have one of their best pitching staffs in recent years, however, today it was the offence that bailed out the hurlers in a match-up against a strong NCAA Division I squad.
Four T-Birds racked up two hits apiece as UBC out hit WSU 10-5 led by
Bob Foerster's 2-for-2 performance that included a pair of runs and two RBI.
Sammie Starr and
Keaton Briscoe each added a pair of runs batted in with
Blake Carruthers,
Nic Lendvoy, and
Mike Elias all chipped in with one.
The T-Birds never trailed on Monday, jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third before taking control of the game with a four run outing in the fourth.
WSU made it 5-2 in the bottom of the inning, however, UBC came right back with another pair of runs in the fifth before tallying single runs in each of the last two innings.
Brandon Kaye got the win despite a shaky start on the mound. He lasted five innings and gave up only a pair of hits but the four walks he issued allowed the Cougars to get to him for four runs (three earned).
David Otterman and
Danny Britton-Foster closed out the game for the T-Birds.
UBC returns home for a pair of doubleheaders this weekend against Corban College. Games start at 12 noon on Friday and 11 a.m. on Saturday at Thunderbird Park.
