VANCOUVER - A fresh start for the UBC Thunderbirds football program begins at home in 2010 as the T-Birds, under the direction of first-year head coach
Shawn Olson, host the Alberta Golden Bears on Saturday, September 4 for a matinee tilt (1:00 p.m.) to open their Canada West campaign.
The league returns to a six-team format in 2010 following the departure of SFU to the NCAA, resulting in several changes to the schedule. There will be one common bye weekend over Thanksgiving in early October and each team will play a home-and-home series with three opponents rather than the previous two.
A highlight on the T-Bird schedule is during that league bye, as UBC hosts the 33rd edition of the Shrum Bowl (rivalry game versus SFU) on Friday, October 8 at 7:00 p.m. Despite SFU's move to the US-based NCAA, the two lower mainland schools have committed to try and maintain their long standing duel.
UBC has the opportunity to take advantage of some home cooking early in the season with three of their first four games at Thunderbird Stadium.
They hit the road to take on the powerful Saskatchewan Huskies in week two before back-to-back games at home against Manitoba (Sept. 18, 1:00 p.m.), which will serve as their annual Homecoming event, and Regina (Sept. 24, 7:00 p.m.).
The T-Birds then meet the 2009 Vanier Cup finalist Calgary Dinos on the road in week five before Shrum Bowl 33 follows during the league bye weekend.
UBC plays two of their three final conference contests on the road with each game featuring as the second-half of their three home-and-home series this year.
Week seven has UBC on the road in Edmonton for a date against the Golden Bears and the following week they play their final regular season home game against the Huskies on Friday, October 22 (7:00 p.m.). The T-Birds close out their conference schedule on the road against Manitoba on October 30.
