BELLINGHAM, WA - Reid Gustavson leads three University of British Columbia athletes ranked 1-2-3 the decathlon and Seattle Pacific University's Ali Worthen is the pace setter in the heptathlon after opening-day action Thursday at the Western Washington University Multi-Events meet being held at Civic Stadium.
Final-day action Friday begins at 9 a.m.
Gustavson leads 15 decathletes with 3,453 points, just 14 in front of teammate Mark Chenery (3,439). The Thunderbirds' Ivan Staeheli is third with 3,351.
Gustavson had the best efforts in the shot put (41-3 3/4) and 400 (51.91), and Chenery the best performances in the 100 (11.25) and long jump (21-2).
Jason Caryl from Central Washington is fourth (3,025), followed by Brandon Roddewig (2,949).
