SEATTLE, WA – The UBC Thunderbirds opened up the 2012 track and field season Saturday at the UW Indoor Preview in Seattle, Washington.
Several strong performances, particularly in the men and women's middle-distance events, signal good things to come this year.
Many top teams from the Pacific Northwest attended the meet, which was held in the Dempsey Indoor facilities at the University of Washington.
In the men's 3,000-metres, first-year
Jack Williams ran a time of 8:40.18, taking eighth in the third heat, while second-year
Justin Kent ran 8:40.80 in the fourth heat, placing 14th.
Turning to the women, first-year
Devan Wiebe ran the 600-metres, clocking 1:35.26, good for third in her heat, and in the 800-metres, second-year
Heather Slinn ran 2:18.23 to place second in her heat.
In the 3,000-metres, first-year
Jackie Regan found an extra gear on the final lap, and kicked from fourth to second place in her heat, finishing in 10:15.95. First-year
Maria Bernard, a 2011 NAIA Cross Country All-American, ran 9:55.37 in the fast heat, placing eighth overall.
Of note in the field events, 2011 NAIA Track Championships triple-jumper
Erin Templeton, a second-year, recorded marks of 11.06-metres in the triple-jump, and 5.18-metres in the long jump.
