BURNABY, B.C. – This year the UBC Thunderbirds are playing host to the Canadian University Rowing Championships at Burnaby Lake. Day 1 was time trials, which ranks the crews into the A (1-6), B (7-12), or C (13-18) final, to take place tomorrow, Sunday November 4.
Despite the gloomy weather, the UBC rowers left everything on the water and walked away with some great initial results. At the end of day one the Women's team qualified all six boats to the A final. Highlights include
Katherine Enns clocking in the fastest time in the lightweight single, and the lightweight four, lightweight double and eight placing third in their time trials. All three boats were within five seconds of the next fastest crews, the eight coming in just before last year's champions from the University of Western Ontario.
The UBC Men's crew remain in contention for five of a possible six medals. Some of the high points from the young team on the opening day of racing include
Angus Todd and
Evan Cheng's third-place finish in the men's lightweight double and a close fourth-place showing from
Valentin Dunsing in the men's lightweight single.
Tomorrow races start at 9 a.m. with the heavyweight women's singles and end at 2:30 p.m. with the Men's eights. Crews from across Canada are represented and the Thunderbirds are excited to build on the initial success they found today on the waters at Burnaby Lake.
