Langley, BC - The UBC Thunderbirds women's soccer team wrapped up their 2012 season with a 1-0 victory over the Regina Cougars to earn the bronze medal at the Canada West Championships. It is the second straight year, the 'Birds had to settle for third place.
BOX SCORE
After losing 1-0 in a shootout on Friday, it didn't take long for UBC to get on the board Saturday afternoon, as
Rachel Ramsden (Richmond, BC) took a
Taylor Shannik (Delta, BC) pass and made no mistake just three minutes into the contest. The Thunderbirds thought they had added to their lead in the 38th minute, but
Janine Frazao's (Port Moody, BC) header went off the post. 1-0 is how things stood at half time.
In the second half, UBC controlled the play and only had a few chances offensively. Defensively, they were outstanding, limiting the Cougars to just one shot on goal. UBC had 10 shots on goal compared to the Cougars one in the entire game. Ramsden's marker would prove to be the winner as the Thunderbirds earned the 1-0 victory.
Leah Peric (Vancouver, BC) playing her final game as a Thunderbird picked up the win in goal, having to make just the one save. Saturday also spelled the end of the collegiate careers of captain
Kelly Cook (Maple Ridge, BC) and Ramsden.
Cook finishes her career as one of the most decorated UBC Thunderbirds ever. She was a Second Team Canada West All-Star in 2010, a First Team Canada West All-Star in 2011 and 2012, and a First Team All-Canadian in 2011.
A Canada West Championship has been elusive for the Thunderbirds over the last five seasons. Since winning in 2007, UBC has had to settle for two silver medals and three bronze medal finishes.
The gold medal match sees Trinity Western taking on Victoria. Both will represent the Canada West at next week's CIS Nationals in Victoria.
