OTTAWA (CIS) –
Savannah King, a swimmer from the University of British Columbia, and Colby Pridham, a hockey player from Saint Mary's University, are the CIS female and male athletes of the week for the period ending Jan. 29, 2012.
King, a second-year student from Vancouver, was named female athlete of the meet at the Canada West championships held in Edmonton after she claimed five medals in as many races, including three first-place finishes, while helping the Thunderbird women win the team title.
The 19-year-old sophomore captured individual gold in the 400 and 800-metre freestyle events, helped the UBC relay set a championship record in the 4x200 free (8:01.50), and added individual silver in the 200 free and bronze in the 200 backstroke.
A 2008 Olympian and the 2011 CIS rookie of the year, King now prepares for the CIS championships set for Feb. 23-25 at the University of Montreal.
Stephanie Toxopeus, a basketball player from Cape Breton, and hockey players Mélodie Daoust of McGill and Jill Morillo of UOIT were also nominated for the women's award.
