Mosher named Canada West Coach of the Year; six 'Birds named all-stars

VANCOUVER – For the second time in three seasons, UBC's Mike Mosher is the Canada West Coach of the Year.

The Canada West Universities Athletic Association (CWUAA) announced the 2015 men's soccer all-stars and major award winners Thursday evening at the conference's annual awards banquet at the Vancouver Marriott Pinnacle Downtown Hotel, ahead of the conference's Final Four tournament which opens Friday.

"It is nice to be recognized by my peers for our teams successful season, but I can gladly tell you I'd give that up for a win tomorrow," exclaimed Mosher, who previously merited the top coach honour in 2009 and 2013. "I would also like to thank my assistant coaches who are exceptional and our student trainers Gevorg and Leo who have been terrific this year and gone above and beyond."

His Thunderbirds went undefeated for the second time in four years, going 10-0-2 while giving up just five goals in the process. UBC won the Pacific Division by 11 points. The Thunderbirds accomplished all this after losing three goalkeepers, an All-Canadian defender and the Canada West Most Valuable Player to graduation at the end of the 2014 campaign.

During his tenure at UBC, Mosher has led the Thunderbirds to five Canada West Championships and four CIS Championship titles.

"We are proud to have Mike as part of our UBC team. He supports athletes both on an off the field and repeatedly develops winning teams," said Gord Hopper, UBC Director of Athletics, Performance and Team Support.

UBC dominated the conference first team of all-stars, with six players earning recognition.

Goalkeeper: Chad Bush, UBC Thunderbirds
Defensive players: Bryan Fong, UBC Thunderbirds; Chris Serban, UBC Thunderbirds; Harry Lakhan, UBC Thunderbirds
Offensive players: Gagan Dosanjh, UBC Thunderbirds; Sean Einarsson, UBC Thunderbirds

Bush led the Canada West in wins (9), goals against (4) and shutouts (7).

Fong and Serban, last year's Canada West and CIS Rookie of the Year, were leaders of a UBC defence that surrendered a league-low five goals in 12 matches.

Lakhan was also named to the all-star team as a defensive player as the fifth-year veteran was an important influence in the midfield, while adding two goals, including the game winner on Sept. 18 against Fraser Valley, UBC's first opponents at the Final Four.

Einarsson and Dosanjh were UBC's offensive leaders, as they scored eight and seven goals, respectively.

"It is great for those players who were recognized tonight, they have had very good seasons thus far and we are all happy for them," Mosher said. "The team has had a good year to date, but this group's focus is about getting some big team awards that are still in front of us."

UBC will play Fraser Valley in the second semifinal tomorrow night at the Canada West Men's Soccer Final Four. The game will begin at 7:30 p.m. on David Sidoo Field at Thunderbird Stadium.
